It's funny how often cog dis gets asked about dolphins being in the poem at the end of each show. Maybe this episode will help with that.

The fatal genetic illness, passed on through a recessive gene, typically in Ashkenazi Jewish people (it's also seen in those with Sephardic Jewish and Central European ancestry)? It's rare genetic disorder caused by the absence of an enzyme that helps break down fatty substances, gangliosides, which build up to toxic levels in the brain and spinal cord and affect the function of the nerve cells. It's incurable, and a miserable way to die. Dolphins ain't going to do s*** to cure Tay-Sachs. Rather than f****** DOPHINS, medical science has largely eliminated Tay-Sachs, at least in the USA. Education campaigns in the Jewish community have led to widespread genetic testing. Carriers can chose to not marry other carriers, or to use egg or sperm donors from non-carriers. Or do in vitro fertilization, testing the fertilized egg for the genes. Or do selective abortion on an affected fetus, on the theory that that's it's a much more merciful way to die than spending months or years in an increasingly deteriorating neurological state. NOT DOLPHINS.
