I get the niche that the Fromsoft games occupy isn't for everyone, and I don't think the open world aspect served Elden Ring very well. But I will say there are few things as satisfying as throwing yourself at the brick wall of an insanely cinematic and intense final boss fight for hours and then getting the triumph of finally breaking that wall with your skull. It's a very masochistic experience but by gawd is that victory so sweet. Took me 6 hours to beat the final boss of Sekiro but I loved every goddamn second of getting there

So what, we're calling us weird masochists who can't cum unless it hurts good enough "superior" now? Well, that's news to me.

2024-05-25 00:39:59 +0000 UTCI have to say I’m in agreement about FromSoftware’s games (AKA soulsborne games). I’m delighted that they have an enthusiastic audience, but it’s not for me. My blood pressure can’t take it, which is why I tip my hat to the absolute maniacs that have done deathless/hitless playthroughs of those games. It’s fucking nuts.

2024-05-23 22:24:07 +0000 UTCyeah, that's kind of the thing, the learning experience and the cautious paranoia it inspires is quite fun for me. That in itself is the appeal, the ludicrous danger coupled with laughing at the way the games troll you. And, to noahs point about bosses just killing you over and over and learning through death....that isn't really how I play at all, instead it's more like an old mega man boss, you hang back, bait attacks, and just watch, likely dying once or twice while probing, before making a real attempt, almost kind of like a fighting game, where you play hyper defensively to learn your opponent's tactics rather than rushing in and getting combo'd to death. That's certainly not for everybody, but I find it a great change of pace every couple years. Likewise, as eli alluded to, I love the truly nightmarish art direction. that said...I didn't like Elden Ring either, it being open world really screwed with how I play and explore these games, and it really didn't work with me. I like the spokes on a wheel/hub design of the earlier ones much more. (I dislike botw/totk for similar reasons)
