Thinking about this AI business

Everyone is very excited about it right now, for good reason.  People who play fair tend not to like cheaters, also for good reason.

But this is just a new version of an old story.  The art industry has always had grifters. And there have always been forces that push back against human creativity.

I‘m pleased for, and support, all the artists pushing back. For my part, I’m going to use it as personal fuel.

I never enjoyed doing those slick digital pieces, but that’s what everyone in the industry seemed to want.  Well now I’m released from any obligation to do it. I can just be weird, and me, and fly or fail being weird and me.

Also that, if I believe that one should buy from artists rather than the thieves that put them out of business, I need to start buying things made by human hands, if I buy them at all. It’s time I did a better job of honoring my Buddhist streak.

I’m also interested in drastically reducing the plastic I purchase, especially single-use plastic. It’s a huge step, but I’m tired of being part of the problem. Convenience has gotten us into this mess just as much as oligarchs have.

To get back to the AI thing, I think including our process along with the delivered package is a way to set ourselves apart from the keyword chuds. Not just progress shots but explaining why we’ve chosen a pose or a color. Let people understand how much actual thinking goes into the process.

I’ve already dabbled in the practice and my commissioners were extremely positive about the idea.  

Just how this is going to change the arts and the industry, I have no idea. But I feel pretty good about my own direction.  I’m not at all despairing, personally. Which may seem odd, because I am generally overwhelmed by art-making.  That, however, is based out of my disability more than the nature of the universe.
