My hiatus from illustration was incredibly good for me and I really appreciate all of you folks who stuck around. I'm wading back in with new clarity and verve. I also got a bump on my ADHD meds which is doing miracles for my stability.
The figures are pin ideas, which I've already put into production sculpting. The other two are my attempt at going from clean linework to more instructive tonal work for painting. It's hard-to-impossible to make a coherent painting based solely on lines when painting is all about tonal shapes. I need to worry less about making a good drawing and let it be messy groundwork.
So while I'm working I'm trying to think about how the blocks of light and dark will direct the eye. So far my attempts are MMMMMMMMM not great because it's hard to get a full range with pencil. I'm also not fabulous at simplifying. But I'm actively thinking about it as I work, and that's a positive change. I'll be wandering around in the weeds for a while, as this kind of work does not come naturally to me.
But I've been so bored to death with the way I've been doing things for the whole of my career and I'm ready for a big positive change, even though the idea makes me weep and gnash my teeth. Learning is HARD, y'all!! Art is hard.
