I think Dumbledore told them one of the Marauders was the spy. Sirius thought it was Remus, Remus thought it was Sirius, and James believed Sirius. I assume that's based on information Dumbledore told them in "strike teams" and based on Death Eater activity thwarting secret Order plans, he deduced that only those four (and maybe Lily?) were aware of the leaked information to tell the Death Etarts so it had to be one of them.

Unfortunately, he was very wrong โฆ ๐ But, did they know that there was a spy before Voldy killed the Potters?? I thought all that didnโt โcome outโ UNTIL the deaths of the Potters โฆ ๐ค Didnโt Sirius say something like โI thought they went with you as the secret keeper at firstโ?? to Lupin โcause he wasnโt too sure that Petter WAS the spyโat least at first โฆ Also, in this scenario couldnโt someone ELSE in the Order have been the spy? It necessarily doesnโt HAVE to be one of the 3, I think โฆ Like what if itโs Moody?? ๐คฏ Think about it: Moody is the most effective Aurur of the Ministry; wouldnโt that make an excellent โspyโ for the โbad guysโ?!?! ๐คฏ
