MTG CB Limited Edition Beta Progress Report
Added 2022-07-01 03:37:28 +0000 UTCIn case you missed the last update, the MTG CB Limited Edition Beta preview is live for all users, whether or not you're a patron!
You can access it here: https://preview.mtgcollectionbuilder.com
State of the Beta
Since our last update:
- The site has been optimized for mobile, including adding native components for many of the search filters.
- We've added the ability to filter and sort sets in your collection by their completion status and current value.
- We've added the ability to sort and filter your collection by card quantities in a variety of permutations.
- We've fixed some outstanding bugs in MacOS and iOS Safari.
- We've made many more bug fixes and little UX improvements.
Coming Up Next
Based on Patreon feedback, we're continuing to use the beta to focus on extra UX improvements alongside reaching feature parity with the current MTG CB on the road to its core new features of tokens, custom collection goals, and foreign cards.
Every part of the new experience should feel like a solid upgrade before flipping the switch and moving all users to it. :)
Items that are being looked at next:
- Table improvements, including possibly embedded exporters. We'll be switching to an entirely more flexible table system.
- Proper handling of sorting server side and client side. Right now it's a strange unintuitive mix.
- Sort and search setting stickiness and general improvements.
- A full UX pass from top to bottom. Interfaces should feel as good as the Edit Cards page does right now on both keyboard and touch devices.
- The Great Subset Split™ and subset interfaces.
- Reaching feature parity with MTG CB, including importers and exporters. We're almost there!
- Tokens (at this point the old MTG CB and new MTG CB will diverge significantly -- this will be the perfect time for a global release.)
- Custom collection goals
- Foreign cards
- Migrating to newer versions of some libraries that MTG CB depends on
Our previous waterfall-ish planning didn't properly account for all the great UX feedback that would be received -- we'll be taking a more agile approach, working in two-week chunks and assessing the next best action item to work on, together. Once we're close to the final Unlimited Edition release, I'll unveil those dates.
It's been a blast interacting with you all on Discord, Facebook, Patreon, and via email. Thank you for all the great ideas and your support.
Current Site
- We've added 2917 cards since our last update. Speaking of which:

Phrased another way, last quarter we added more cards than were released in all of 2016!
We've all been feeling the pace at which new cards get printed and released. While this does put a bit of a burden on MTG CB (and collectors!) to keep up, I've built an increasing number of automation tools to make the process as fast as possible on MTG CB's end to compensate. Once card scans are up and these cards are on TCGPlayer, it's fairly seamless.
The Podcast
- The plan is still to revive this once the new version of MTG CB is out the door. I've recently converted a spare bedroom into a secondary game room and recording studio and I'm looking forward to putting it to good use!
- Side note: The podcast actually led to the Erasmus University Rotterdam reaching out to the MTG CB community to conduct a study on collectible trading card games. That was super cool!
Feedback
- Have any questions or feedback? Feel free to reach out to me via Facebook, email, or Discord if you're a Patron.
