Richard Kelly's follow up to Donnie Darko (2001) is an absurd, fanciful, ambitious, and wildly uneven work that was quickly passed over upon its release in 2006, never reaching the cult status of its predecessor. However, with its oddly prescient themes of police violence, endless war, mass surveillance, and mass media, Southland Tales was always destined to make some sort of comeback. We thought this would be the perfect pick for Movie Night and a great choice to watch together. We're recording the episode tonight, feel free to chime in with any questions or comments.
Southland Tales is currently available to stream on Mubi, can be purchased on demand from several fine retailers, or you could always pirate it. Wouldn't that be the devilishly fucked option? The Richard Kelly option?
