Thanks for sharing your thoughts and that additional context, Saga. That's the type of thing we were missing going into the viewing, and probably would've affected our interpretation. I feel bad for not mentioning the soundtrack, because it's great! Loved the music, that's something another patron mentioned as a point of focus as well. Unrelated, but are you on discord? 2021-03-20 19:38:34 +0000 UTCI saw this one before EVA so my relationship to is colored very differently, I was very deep into anime (and a teenager) when I saw it but I feel like I was just impressed with the 'freedom' of the production, it is for sure baffling to watch but this is essentially a group of creators having fun and experimenting, and they were allowed to do so because it was a direct to video thing. I find that also super interesting that this thing that then ended up on Adult swim and a lot of Westerners became exposed to this thing that was intended, probably, for hardcore fans (if anybody) - so I guess an interesting leftists take is taht this is something weird that was allowed to happen w/o much meddling from the market - and god I haven't thought about this for so long but after Eva the creators got roasted by fans and got a reputation for 'hating the fans' for not giving people the epic robot fight ending they wanted so maybe that explains the pent up need they had to mess up the genre even further?? Also you guys didn't touch on the soundtrack but I think a lot of FLCL (they way I see it) is images being created and animated around the songs by the band Pillows that are featured heavily, maybe did most of it?? I don't remember anymore :v I would need to watch it again to try and remember what my read on the story/characters is now.. without any background on it watching it as a teen I just it was super dope haha.
