Dear Slicer, Thank you for your thoughts. It is indeed challenging to have such inconsistency in saber. You are correct, I can see that in my local area there is confusion about PIL. The good news is that people here seem open to listening and learning about how to make this call correctly. Watching many of your narrations, I can see you many insights regarding referee calls. Can I ask how you would call the PIL, particularly when it has been established simultaneously vs. the opponents advancing attack? Or could you please give a comment on my below assessment? I found the below from “Sydney Saber”: To adopt the Point-in-Line position, the sabreur (almost always the Defender) must: • Establish the point-in-line position with a straight arm • Threaten the Attacker’s target area using the sabre tip • Hold their hand in pronation (knuckles up) Current convention is that establishment requires two fencing periods to be considered a point-in-line. Two fencing periods is the time needed to make two simple actions, e.g. two advances, two retreats, or an advance then a retreat. This appears consistent with how I would call it: At the moment of “Ale!”, one fencer immediately places a PIL with 2 retreating steps, and simultaneously the other fencer launches an advancing attack. In this instance, I would award the Priority to the PIL, following the above notes (and the convention from 30 years ago). If the first fencer placed the PIL and remained stationary, then he/she did not make sufficient time to establish the PIL and hence I would award priority to the advancing fencer. If you could mention, how you would call it, it would be much appreciated!

2025-04-10 08:00:14 +0000 UTCHi Allen, really appreciate your support. In theory I don't believe that the rules for PIL have changed at all in the last 30 years. The problem is that more and more, the rulebook is simply ignored allowing every individual to have their own "interpretation" of the rules. From my experience, at a local level many fencers don't understand line so just never give it. There are so many myths about line that I have heard that I find very frustrating. Ultimately you are at the mercy of the referees own preferences, leading to a lot of inconsistency

I fenced saber over 30 years ago and have just returned to the sport. It has been great to come back, but I am new to so many rule changes! 30 years ago, A point in line together with one step back would take priority at the start. A beat attack was required to remove it. Where I am fencing now says the PIL does not have priority in this instance. In your video above, Madrigal vs Xu, Madrigal looks to get priority with the PIL (and he didn't even step back). What's your take on this? Much appreciated!
