Hi, I live in the rural deep south. Most people don't stop to scoop up roadkill, the only real exception being deer. And even then, it's usually if they hit it and the stomach isn't busted. Most people don't scoop up squirrels, raccoons, etc. People DO eat those things, but not usually scraped off of the road. Also, raccoons do have bones in their penis. My dad has some, he'll tell people they're called "sweet sticks" because they taste sweet when you suck on them, then he makes fun of anyone who falls for it for sucking raccoon penis. I've never fallen for it because I'm not stupid and know him well enough but a lot of people do.

Ok backwoods Midwesterner here . Been hunting awhile and I will say it's dependant entirely on the time of year the animal is harvested. For instance rabbits cannot be harvested in summer months the weather has to be below I belive 20°F for the weevils in the rabbits to die off and make the meat safe. I don't know about bears they're not in my area . And as fat as disease for deer goes the only things we have to worry about are blue tongue and CWD blue to get simple to diagnose just open its mouth, CWD on the other hand unless you've directly seen the animal walking about is hard to diagnose on your own and the only people I know of in the area that can test game animals are the DNR . Hunting seasons have a reason beyond animal conservation
