Sorry I missed this at the time.... but that is an interesting one. I've not looked into it too deeply but I know the BoLS Badab War book from 2009 gives some of the the art of them a samurai theme, so I wonder if that was the origin point. I mean it could also just be people scrabbling to find another East Asian culture to base them on since they're a White Scars successor and many people in the west are a little more familiar with Japanese culture than many others in the region so naturally gravitated that way?

2025-12-07 21:48:46 +0000 UTCFrom what I remember from an interview with Rick Priestley, the 2 missing legions were never intended to be anything in particular, so it's very unlikely the Rainbow Warriors were ever intended for that spot. There were, after all, several other chapters in the RT book who didn't become legions either. I suspect if you saw someone saying that it's from them hearing that they're 'one of the original Space Marine chapters' and thinking that means they were one of the legions in Rogue Trader (I know I've seen people make that mistake), and from there its only a small leap to assume their absence is connected to missing legions. But, of course, the history of these games is tortured and there's multiple people who've worked on them, so I also wouldn't be shocked if one of them hadn't pitched making them one of the legions back in 1989, just nothing ever came of it hah

2025-12-04 05:25:28 +0000 UTCI'm not sure of a source for this one so take it with the usual grain of salt, but I swear I remember hearing somewhere that the Rainbow Warriors were the original second legion before GW decided to make them "lost". As 40k's foremost lore detectives I'd be curious if you knew anything about that.
